Mentors and Teachers

Mentors Blog

When one considers the need for mentors and mentoring it is of outmost importance to also remember self-responsibility. The whole concept of mentors and gurus can easily slip into ‘worship mode’, that is a human being is put on a pedestal surrounded by worshipers who chooses to give up their own thinking and feelings about something not understanding that this might be of importance. This in my view relates very much to a person’s own ability to take responsibility for his/her words, behavior and/or choices. By “worshiping” someone else, such as worshiping a guru, in such a way also means that a person avoids taking his/her own responsibility, and will remain ‘small’ like a little child. This does not mean that we do not need teachers and mentors, but that in the end we need to be able to stand on our own two feet.

In Peru one ceremony I participated in by the Laguna Huacarpay where we received the Creator’s Rites addressed this whole issue of the value of teachers and mentors, but at the same time the ceremony underlined that ultimately we need to be able to take responsibility ourselves for our actions, behaviors and choices in life and we need to release our mentors and teachers. In the end a mentor or teacher wants to help and be of assistance, however that person will not want another person to become dependent on that help and assistance, true mentorship is for a person to become self-reliant in her or his own right. Self-responsibility is ultimately very freeing, and as I have always said, I’m not part of a sect – I DO NOT GIVE AWAY MY POWER!
